Discipleship training –To embrace the Christian faith in freedom

wortundtat takes care of both the physical and psychological well-being of people in need. One example is the offer of faith courses from our partner Hellenic Ministries in Greece. These are courses in which interested refugees can get to know the Christian faith and the Bible better. Mehrin (name changed), a young Iranian woman, explains: “In Athens I met people who want to help me. They welcomed me and gave me new hope,” she says in February 2020 at the Hellenic Ministries meeting centre. She arrived in Greece in autumn 2019 – together with her 14-year-old sister. They had had to flee from Iran. Family members had been subjected to violence. The authorities had demanded that they leave the country.

Mehrin quickly gained a foothold in Athens, partly because she speaks fluent English. So she also made friends with our partner and started to attend the faith course there. She says: “That was not possible in Iran. Without other Christians things were difficult. Now I can study the Bible intensively in freedom. I can live a Christian life and learn more and more about what it means to be a Christian.”

In Athens, God provided wonderfully for us

The course lasted from October 2019 to May 2020. “Mehrin was a very attentive and interested participant. She engaged intensively with the faith topics. The perspective that the Christian faith offers – every person is a beloved creature of God – gave her new courage to face life”, reports one of the teachers.

In the summer Mehrin set off again together with her sister. “In Athens, God took wonderful care of us. We met families from different nations whom I will never forget. But the city was not a safe place for us. We were robbed three times. And my sister could not go to school.”

At the end of September 2020, she and her sister made their way to a big German city. Friends of her father welcomed her there. She joined a church, which is also attended by some Persian Christians. “I went to church twice and met Iranian and non-Iranian believers. I like the church where many nationalities come together. Most of them are young and have a big heart for God!” In November Mehrin hopes that she and her sister will have the opportunity to stay in Germany for the time being.

We at wortundtat are thankful that we can give people a foundation on which they can build their further path in life with offers like the faith courses.
